In a world where technology is rapidly evolving, the role of a Project Manager is crucial in steering projects to success. As a woman in a predominantly male-dominated industry, my journey has been both challenging and rewarding. I hope my story can inspire others to pursue their passions, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
From Art to Project Management
With a background in art, this was a field that nurtured my creativity and attention to detail. I spent years honing my skills in various artistic disciplines, which taught me the importance of vision, planning, and execution. Little did I know that these skills would become invaluable in my future career as a Project Manager.
Running a Small Business
From 2020 to 2023, I ran a small business specialising in customised pet portrait paintings, as well as bespoke greeting cards and various other personalised paintings. This venture allowed me to combine my love for art with entrepreneurship.
Managing a business required me to wear many hats – from marketing and customer service to project planning and execution. Each painting was a project in itself, demanding meticulous attention to detail, effective time management, and clear communication with clients. These experiences have sharpened my skills in multitasking and consistently delivering high-quality results within tight deadlines.
The Leap into Technology at Circyl
Transitioning from art to technology required a significant mindset shift and stepping out of my comfort zone. My path led me to Circyl, a company that values innovation and diversity. Here, I found a supportive environment that encouraged me to leverage my artistic background in managing projects.
Determined to bring my unique perspective to the tech industry, I completed an APMG International AgilePM Foundation and Practitioner course, passing both exams and gaining my qualification, whilst continuing to familiarise myself with the latest technological trends. This journey of continuous learning was both challenging and exhilarating.
As a Project Manager, I have worked on various exciting projects, collaborating with talented individuals from different disciplines. This role has allowed me to blend my creative skills with technical knowledge, resulting in innovative solutions and successful project outcomes.
Overcoming Challenges
Being a woman in a male-dominated industry comes with its own set of challenges; with only 29% of women represented in the tech industry in 2024, despite women constituting 49% of the UK’s workforce (Women in tech insights 2024 | Progress, challenges & opportunities from the Lorien report). There have been moments of doubt and instances where I felt the need to prove myself. However, these experiences have only strengthened my resolve.
I have learned to assert myself confidently, communicate effectively, and build strong relationships with my colleagues. The support from my team and mentors has been instrumental in my growth and success.
Embracing Diversity
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been witnessing the positive impact of diversity in the workplace. At Circyl, we celebrate different perspectives and encourage inclusive collaboration. This diversity fosters creativity and drives innovation, making our projects more dynamic and successful. I am proud to be part of a company that recognises the value of diverse voices and actively promotes gender equality.
The Love for Planning
Throughout my life, I have always been a lover of planning. From organising birthdays to surprise trips, creating to-do lists has been my way of ensuring everything runs smoothly. This passion for planning has seamlessly translated into my role as a Project Manager. The ability to meticulously plan, prioritise tasks, and manage time effectively has been crucial in delivering successful projects.
Looking Ahead
As I continue my journey in the tech industry, I am excited about the future. I hope to inspire other women to pursue careers in technology and project management. My advice to anyone facing similar challenges is to stay true to your passions, embrace continuous learning, and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The tech industry needs diverse voices, and together, we can drive meaningful change.
